Testosterone Cypionate: Side Effects and Risks
Testosterone cypionate, a widely used form of testosterone replacement therapy, helps men with low testosterone levels (“low T”). Known by brand names such as Duratest, Depo-Testosterone, and Testoject LA, it is effective in restoring testosterone levels and is generally well-tolerated by most patients.
Although it is a highly beneficial form of hormone replacement therapy it is considered a Schedule III controlled substance in the United States. Testosterone cypionate requires a prescription and must be used under the supervision of a licensed physician and healthcare provider.
- Soreness at the Injection Site: This medication is administered as a deep intramuscular injection in an oil base, providing a steady and slow release. When initiating testosterone cypionate injections, the most common side effect is soreness and muscle stiffness at the injection site. With time, your muscles will adapt, and these symptoms will decrease with each injection.
- Oily Skin and Acne: During the early stages of treatment, men may experience oily skin, night sweats, and acne, particularly on the upper back and shoulders. These effects are typically minor and can be treated with over-the-counter skin products.
- Potentially elevated Cholesterol Levels : Long-term use may lead to elevated cholesterol levels. However, with regular blood tests and dietary modifications, most men can maintain healthy metabolic and cardiovascular markers while on this treatment.
- Cosmetic Side Effects: A significant concern for some men is testicular shrinkage. While primarily a cosmetic concern, this side effect can be managed with human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). HCG is a hormone that promotes the production of luteinizing hormone to help maintain testicle size.
While the side effects above may or may not occur, untreated low testosterone levels are more detrimental to long-term health and longevity than the potential side effects of TRT. Research shows that men on TRT often enjoy better cardiovascular and metabolic health than those with low testosterone.
