How Does Kybella Work?

Frequently asked questions
Who is and who is not a good candidate?
Ideal candidates for Kybella are adults with moderate to severe submental fullness, commonly called a “double chin”. If you have localized fat deposits (excess fat) on your neck and body and are seeking a non-surgical option you may also be a suitable candidate for this procedure.
While kybella is FDA approved for the submental ie “double-chin” area, many patients with excess “bra-roll” fat, jowling, “buffalo hump” fat and even dimpling following liposuction or a c-section can benefit from this procedure.
You’ll see the best results if you’re close to your goal weight and want to burn through frustrating targeted bumps or “fatty areas” that are impeding you from feeling as confident as you’d like to be.
You are NOT the right candidate for Kybella if you have excessive fullness in the desired treatment area, have a history of autoimmune conditions or bleeding disorders, are pregnant or nursing, have a history of difficulty swallowing, or have undergone “chin liposuction” in the past.
What is the downtime and how many sessions do I need?
You can expect to see swelling and puffiness immediately after your appointment. This can lasts up to 2 to 3 weeks. However, most of the swelling does subside over a few days. Ice and arnica can help immediately post procedure.
Your treated areas will look WORSE before they look better. However, once your lymphatics has cleared the cellular debris after 4 to 6 weeks, the area will have an improved contour. Most patients find that the results are well worth the recovery process.
The number of treatment sessions depends on the amount of fullness of the area. Most patients do require a minimum of 2-3 sessions to see optimal results.
What are the side effects? Is it safe?
Yes. KYBELLA® has been extensively studied, with over 20 clinical studies conducted worldwide. Its primary component, deoxycholic acid, is a naturally found substance in the body that assists with the degrading of dietary fats.
Common side effects include redness and tenderness at the injection sites, swelling, numbness, bruising, and small, firm palpable areas around the treatment site that usually subside over the next few weeks.
Less common and more severe complications can include damage to the marginal mandibular nerve, facial muscle weakness, or difficulty swallowing. How long do my results last? Are the results permanent?
You’ll start to see results 4-6 weeks after each session with optimal results 4-6 weeks after your last session. Once you’ve reached your aesthetic goal, the results of Kybella treatment are generally long-lasting since the targeted fat cells have been permanently destroyed. Maintaining a stable weight will aid in maintaining your results long-term and will contribute to an enhanced profile in the long run.
